What is truth?
Pontius Pilate asked that question when he was interrogating Jesus.
Here’s the exchange in John 18:
“Then You are a king!” Pilate said.
“You say that I am a king,” Jesus answered. “For this reason I was born and have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to My voice.”
“What is truth?” Pilate asked.
Do you know?
I believe it’s neither hard to find nor difficult to understand. But it is hard for some to believe.
Pilate was looking directly into the face of truth and still missed it. He was looking with earthly eyes so he could not see. He knew something was right and true about Jesus but he didn’t have the courage to surrender.
Before this interaction between Pilate and the King, Jesus had testified to the truth with His followers.
He said to those who believed in Him, You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (John 8:32)
Then in John 14:6, Jesus said to His disciples, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
What is truth?
You may already know where I’m going with this but let me first say what truth is not.
Truth is not, whatever works for you. It’s not “my truth” or “your truth.” Truth is not subjective to a person’s whimsical feelings. It’s not necessarily what the majority says. It’s not simply what is known or believed. It’s not what is publicly proven.
Truth is a divine revelation—a constant, irrevocable, everlasting, indisputable fact that Jesus is God, and we are not. Jesus is the origin and embodiment of truth who came to seek and save the lost, which we are without His intervention.
Jesus is the Word who was with God in the beginning, the Word who was God, who created all things. Jesus is the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus is the King of kings, the Lord of lords, the truth who sets us free, and the only way to God the Father in Heaven.
This fact is the basis for my worldview, and I expect it to be the worldview of every Jesus follower.
I don’t need to tell you that we are living in a culture of death and lies. So many people are confused and deceived. Logic and reason are difficult to find.
There is an all-out war on children. People are fighting, legislating, and politicizing the right to kill innocent babies in the womb. Animals are regarded more highly than children.
Scores of people are trying to convince us that children can decide to change their gender. They give them drugs to stop their puberty, inject them with cross-sex hormones, and subject them to surgeries to remove or disfigure their genitals. All this madness is done under the guise of “helping” children “transition” into something they could never be—the opposite sex.
One of our U.S. Supreme Court Justices can’t define what a woman is even though she is one. When interviewed, dozens of Americans stumble to define what a woman is.
Our government, and a large population of our society, celebrate and promote sexual sin, and encourage men dressed up as women, to read to and dance half naked in front of children.
How did we get here?
It brings me to another thing that Jesus said in John 10:10. The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.
Babies are being killed in the womb, children’s innocence is being stolen, and their lives are being destroyed at the hands of mothers, fathers, doctors, and politicians. That's the work of the thief, who is the devil. Yes, there is a devil. His name is Satan. He is a formidable adversary, but he’s nothing to fear, and though he’s wreaking havoc now, we know he loses in the end.
The other problem is the church and Christians who are looking the other way.
Evil prevails when good people do nothing and say nothing.
We who are Christians, have a responsibility to speak the truth in love. We need to be gracious, kind, merciful, and compassionate, but not at the expense of truth. Jesus said, He is, the way, the truth, and the life. So, our goal should be to proclaim Jesus as the answer to every problem because He is everything we need for life and godliness. (2 Peter 1:3)
Jesus said everyone who belongs to the truth listens to His voice.
Are we listening? If we say we belong to Jesus/the truth, we should be listening to Him.
Jesus also said; that if we love Him, we will obey Him. (John 14:15) If we’re listening and say we love Him, are we obeying Him?
In Hosea 4:6 we read that God’s people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; for rejecting Him.
It's clear in our society that many people lack knowledge and truth, and have rejected God. It is the responsibility of a Christian to provide people with the opportunity to hear the truth, receive the knowledge of the Holy, and respond to His invitation to repent, believe, and have abundant life.
Abundant Life Women’s Ministries is dedicated to helping people experience the abundant life Jesus came to give them. That begins with knowing and proclaiming the truth.
The Bible and prayer are the foundation of our ministry. John 8:32 sets the tone for all we do. Jesus, who is the truth, sets people free. Therefore, we share the Gospel and the entire truth of God’s Word at our gatherings, even the hard parts that may make people feel uncomfortable.
The message of God's Word can be convicting because it confronts our sin. This can be painful, but people must hear the true Gospel and their need for salvation in Christ.
It's also important for Christians to be reminded that they will be held accountable for their life of faith and how they cared for the least of these. This should motivate all of us to stand for truth and fight for life.
Jesus came to testify to the truth and said that everyone who belongs to the truth listens to His voice.
Shouldn’t we be following His example and testifying to the truth?
Truth is the most important thing we can communicate. It's the most valuable gift we can give to people. Embracing the truth sets everyone free. How could we keep that from people?
Acts 4:12 says, there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
The name that is above every other name is Jesus. Let's give the world the truth they need the most. Let's give them Jesus.
